MastSwiniesTaing

The wreckage from the Avanti Savoia is seen here as part of a mast and part of a rib which has been pressed into service as a strainer for a fence.

These weathered pieces of oak display a natural beauty which can be brought out by cleaning and treating with oils to bring back the natural colour.

When you are aware of the different types and ages of driftwood you are able to recover a wide range - most are smaller than a fencing post!.

The pictures below show various pieces after they have been cleaned with a wire brush - this gives an idea of the final shape of the wood. The wood is then extensively treated using a palm sander with various grades of sandpaper. When a clean finish is reached the wood is treated with restoring oils and with teak oil to bring out the grain.

The collection below is from various beaches around Shetland - Sil Wick, Culswick, Lerwick and Bressay.
