Maritime Sculpture

The project has been a long haul involving several stages before viewing the finished timbers and I have had to feel my way for much of it. From a slow start with assemblies of small driftwood, bones and beaks the project moved on to larger wrecked timbers where nature dictates the sculpture.

One day by random at the beach at Swinis Taing I found a piece of wreckage from a sailing ship which later turned out to be the Avanti Savoia. This wreckage was a considerable size and was transported back home where is was extensively cleaned and treated with restoring oils to form the finished rib.

On other beaches more sizeable pieces of driftwood from ribs to masts have been found and they have been recovered and treated to bring out the grain and colour in these century old timbers.

I have entitled the collection “Maritime Sculpture”.

Smaller pieces can be found at many places along the coast. Sometimes they can be arranged into something interesting ..
